I am certain to lose readers by posting a link to this article but I can’t resist:

Tom says...

Kevin Hogan is both right and wrong in his passionate rant about ‘The Secret’.

Sitting under a tree and trying to manifest food or money or anything just doesn’t work.

But at the same time, sitting under the tree and realizing that things could be better, then getting up off your ass and doing something to bring about change, does work.

I think THAT is the real essence of the ideas in the so called Law of Attraction. To promote just the mental aspects of the process IS doing a dis-service to the ‘believers’.

Sean Woodruff says...

The “secret” demonstrated by “The Secret” is that if you market to hopes and dreams, people will buy anything.

This is just an observatoin and not a judgement.

Santa Clause, the Tooth Fairy, the Easter Bunny and many others sell a lot of stuff too.

I can’t help but wonder that for those of us who have an aversion to hyper-marketing and pie-in-the-sky promises, which seem to be more whipped cream and sprinkles than even pie, if the current response to The Secret is more a knee-jerk reaction to the marketing skills of the author than a reasonable response to a legitimate truth that needs more investigation and consideration.

I do not like and will not support any message that tauts empty or vain promises regardless of its vehicle, i.e. political, religious, philosophical, etc., or its source.  On the other hand, I would consider it a grave mistake on my part to arbitrarily disregard something simply because my initial reaction to it was gut-wrenching disdain.

It is true, if you market hopes and dreams, people WILL buy anything.  That’s why religion and political ideologies are such powerful forces.  Not to mention that they have always been marketed well.  The bottom line?  The age-old adage holds true whether considering politics, religion, the Easter Bunny, or The Secret: Buyer beware.

Remember, the proof is always in the pudding.  Or, in this case, the pie.  I’ll take a small piece, thank you.

This is just sickening - He is a parasite.

Kevin Hogan is trying to do one thing with this bashing and ridicule - Draw attention to himself, so he can sell you his book - his “Truth”.

Never trust someone with such transparent ulterior motives.

Go back under that rock you climbed out from - all of you parasites that want to suck off the interest and $$$ being generated by The Secret.

vlink,

Thanks for taking the time to comment.

I know Kevin and have spoken at great length with him about his motivations for exposing The Secret.  And I am confident in saying your assumptions are completely unfounded.

But even if you were correct, I would encourage you to attack his ideas and not Kevin himself.

If you believe he is mistaken in what he is saying, please tell us where he - and the rest of us skeptics - are wrong.

Otherwise, your arguments are meaningless.

all of you - yes, you included are using The Secret to gain.  To gain traffic to your blogs, websites, and so on.  To gain monetarily through the sale of your products and your “Truths”.

You have nothing to offer anyone except your controversial comments about the law of attraction.

I don’t have any problem with your skepticism.  I think it is healthy and needed.  What I am opposed to is using The Secret and bashing it so strongly - for personal gain.

Blair Warren says...

vlink,

Please take a few moments and look around my site and tell me where I am making money from this.

Yes, I have some Amazon affiliate links on my recommended books page.  And last I checked, I’ve made just over $11.00 since I’ve been writing about The Secret.  Wow!

And yes, I am involved in Kevin’s book project and will hopefully make a little money from it.  However, I agreed to contribute to it before I ever knew a thing about any money.  Money wasn’t the issue.  It still isn’t.

I can tell you that everyone I know that has stepped up to expose the inaccuracies and dangers of The Secret has paid a price, both personally and professionally, for doing so.  And I haven’t heard one say he was only in it for money or traffic.

Your assertions are, pardon my language, complete bullshit.

Again, if you have trouble with the ideas we are bringing up, I invite you to dispute those instead of attacking us personally.

I’m not the only one out here making the same connections to your Irrational opposition to the Law of Attraction and marketing yourselves.

it is just so transparent really.

Blair Warren says...

vlink,

I will try this just one more time:

Would you please address some of the specific points Kevin, Dave Lakhani, myself and others have raised?

For the sake of argument, let’s just say you’re right and we’re all out to make a pile of money and destroy people’s hopes and dreams in the process.

Now, with that out of the way, where are we wrong in what we’re saying about The Secret?

vlink,

“Think left and think right and think low and think high. Oh, the things you can think up if only you try!”

Many thanks to Dr. Seuss.

Blair Warren says...

Hey vlink,

You may have been right about the money thing.

I just checked my Amazon Associates account and I’ve made $13.89 since I’ve been writing about The Secret.

Of course, I have lost over 100 mailing list subscribers.  But heck, I made $13.89!  Not a bad trade-off, wouldn’t you say?

I bet the pro-Secret gurus aren’t even raking it in like I am.
